WSUP has been featured in a blog written by Chris Holmes, USAID Global Water Coordinator and Deputy Assistant Administrator in USAID’s Bureau for Economic Growth, Education and Environment.
In the article, Chris Holmes writes about his visit to Vizag, eastern India, and where he meets women’s self-help groups who are playing a crucial work in eliminating open defecation (becoming open defecation free – ODF) in the slums where they live.
He writes:
“With the help of these women-led self-help groups, [and] Water and Sanitation for the Urban Poor (WSUP), the USAID partner helping to implement the new Vizag sanitation strategy, the city is projected to meet the March 2017 deadline for ODF status.”
WSUP is helping USAID and the Government of India to fulfil a national commitment to improve sanitation for all through its ambitious Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM), which aims to eliminate open defecation by 2 October 2019, the 150th anniversary of the birth of Mahatma Gandhi.
