Maputo, Mozambique
Mozambique’s capital city is Maputo with approximately 1 million inhabitants. Greater Maputo is composed of two municipal Councils of Maputo and Matola that have a combined population of over two million. It lies in the extreme south of the country and is a major port, on the estuary of the river Matola.
The districts of Maputo are subdivided in to Bairros. In district 3 and 4 many bairros are not linked to the central water network and water is provided by independent water providers. Where connections do exist, many of them are illegal, leading to high revenue losses for the water company. Management of the water standpipes is often poor.
The Tchemulane programme aims to provide better water services for up to 162,000 people in 8 bairros of Maputo. In addition WSUP has identified a particular need to focus on sanitation including provision of basic services, training local suppliers in latrine construction, supporting local private sector in developing latrine emptying services and sludge treatment. The programme will reach approximately 66,000 people for sanitation improvement.
