The UK Department for International Development (DFID)
was influential in the establishment of Water and Sanitation for the Urban Poor, convening early meetings between the various stakeholders, providing seed funding to establish WSUP and its Secretariat based in London. have allocated $11.9 million for a four year agreement starting in 2009 which has five strategic objectives focusing on replication and scale up of the WSUP approach. This will be achieved through taking two of the projects to an implementation phase (Antananarivo and Maputo) and to further develop the project portfolio through the delivery of two development phase projects (Gatwekera and Dhaka). In addition, there are strategic objectives to establish a Professional Fellowship Programme and to support local service provider capacity building, the environmental impact of project work and impact assessing the programme set out above.
