More than 1 billion people live in poor urban communities Over 300 million do not have access to safe water
Over 400 million do not have access to adequate sanitation

Globally, progress is being made towards reaching the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) on Water and Sanitation. However, in many cities the situation is getting worse. By 2030, it is expected that 60% of the world's population will live in urban areas and 180,000 people are added to the global urban population every day.

Most reside in informal urban settlements and slums and face many problems, including inadequate water and sanitation. Many are thirsty and dirty and constantly stressed about finding enough affordable and safe water; even more must mange their defecation in difficult and un-dignified conditions.
